The Soul-Warming Healing Broth
There's something magical about making your own broth - it's like giving yourself the biggest, warmest hug from the inside out. This isn't just any broth recipe; it's become my go-to whenever I need to reset, recharge, or just show my body some extra love. Whether you're feeling under the weather, dealing with digestive issues, or simply craving something deeply nourishing, this broth is your answer.
I discovered the power of homemade broth during a particularly stressful period when my gut was all out of whack. Store-bought versions just weren't cutting it - they were either too salty, full of weird additives, or just didn't have that soul-warming quality I was craving. So I started experimenting in my kitchen, and this recipe was born from pure necessity and a lot of trial and error.
This broth is like a reset button for your whole system. The combination of anti-inflammatory turmeric, immune-boosting garlic, and mineral-rich seaweed creates something that's both incredibly healing and surprisingly delicious. Plus, making it fills your whole house with the most amazing, comforting smell.
HEALING INGREDIENTS (I choose organic when possible)
For the Aromatics:
1 red onion, quartered (keep the skin on for extra nutrients)
1 whole garlic bulb, smashed (no need to peel - easier!)
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, roughly chopped (skin on is fine - optional)
1 chili pepper, roughly chopped (optional, for those who like heat)
For the Vegetable Base:
3-4 cups mixed chopped vegetables and peelings (carrot peelings, red cabbage, fresh mushrooms, leeks, celery - whatever you have!)
1 cup greens like kale or spinach
1/2 cup dried shiitake mushrooms (optional)
30g dried wakame seaweed (optional, but amazing for minerals)
For the Healing Seasonings:
1 tbsp coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil
1 tbsp whole peppercorns
1-2 tbsp ground turmeric (start with less if you're new to it)
1 tsp coconut aminos (optional, adds depth)
1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes (optional, for B vitamins and cheesy flavor)
Fresh coriander or herbs of choice
Sea salt to taste
The Liquid:
12 cups (3 liters) filtered water
TIP: Save your vegetable scraps throughout the week.
METHOD
Start with the aromatics: Heat your coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, and chili if using. Let them sizzle and become fragrant for a few minutes. Your kitchen will start smelling incredible!
Add all the goodness: Toss in your mixed vegetables, greens, shiitake mushrooms, and wakame seaweed. Give everything a good stir to combine.
Season with love: Add the peppercorns, turmeric, coconut aminos, nutritional yeast, and fresh herbs. Stir everything together - the colors will be so beautiful!
Add the water: Pour in your filtered water, making sure everything is covered. Don't worry if it looks like a lot - it'll concentrate as it simmers.
Let it work its magic: Bring to a boil, then reduce to the lowest simmer. Let it bubble away gently, uncovered, for 1.5 to 2 hours. This is the perfect time for some self-care - read a book, take a bath, just relax while your broth does its thing.
Strain and taste: Pour the broth through a fine-mesh strainer into another pot or large bowl. Taste and add salt as needed. The flavor should be rich, warming, and deeply satisfying.
Serve with intention: Enjoy it as is, or pour over noodles, quinoa, or rice. Top with fresh herbs, cooked vegetables, or some protein if you want a more substantial meal.
STORAGE: This keeps in the fridge for up to a week or can be frozen in portions for up to 3 months. I like to freeze it in ice cube trays for easy single servings!
